Rangers Update From the Week

The big news today for the Rangers is that Jeff Beukeboom, legendary Rangers D-man will replace Ulf Samuelsson as our new assistant coach. Beukeboom had been coaching the defense down in Hartford for the last several years and was influential in the growth nad development in Brady Skjei and Dylan McIlrath. Two major impacts this move has: First, McIlrath who was often cast off by AV and his staff now has a legitimate shot to make a difference on the Rangers blue line. Secondly, the Blue line is likely to undergo a major facelift under Beukeboom who favors a hard-nosed, purely defensive style, something the Rangers are in dire need of. I think the move was positive one and will be influential in the upcoming seasons.

In Restricted free agency news, the Rangers have extended qualifying offers to Kreider, Miller, Hayes, McIlrath, Bodie, Hughes, Hrivik, and Jensen on June 27. On June 28 they were allowed to hear other offers from teams. Now, on July 1st at noon, they are able to accept the qualifying offers. Today we will likely find out with RFA’s will be continuing with the team next year.

As many of you know, the New York Rangers were almost silent on the 2 draft days in Buffalo, NY. The one move they did make was scooping up journeyman D-man, Nick Holden for a 2017 4th round draft pick. Holden is 29 and played all 82 games with the Colorado Avalanche last seasons registering 6 goals and 16 assists. Holden is 6 foot 4 inches and 210 pounds that can hopefully add some defensive skill to the blueline.

In other news, Eric Staal has signed a 3 year, 3.5 million dollar deal with the Minnesota Wild. I’m guessing he will play Center there.
